The effect on rats of feeding sodium nitrite and herring meal produced from sodium nitrite treated herring, has been investigated. The results are in agreement with the findings of TARR & CARTER (1942). In the present experiments sodium nitrite was fed daily, and the total doses were up to 400-600 mg over a period of 70 days without producing signs of toxic effects. The growth was normal and autopsy of the animals revealed no abnormalities of the different organs. In the experiments with herring-meals, these were added to the diet in a concentration of 50 %, and the sodium-nitrite intake was up to 70-105 mg over a period of 70 days.en
